This was the last Newsletter that went out before the launch of the Roberto Gell minitour of September, 2009. The Grand Opening of the new KRucial Reggae series at the Chuch club in Boston was the primary focus. After its resounding success - pitting Gell's tight arrangements & orignal sound against a showcase of other unique acts running their own lyrics over more traditionally known rhythms - the 8 piece band (including members of Dub Station & I-Trinity) went on to headline the WeBeJammin' Fest in Maine, as well as venues in Manchester, NH (alongside Burnin' Roots) and Lowell, MA. Click on our Facebook page to see some choice images from the run, which brought the players closer together, personally - with new fans - and with the music itself, much of which requires a lot of study and numerous performances to perfect its delivery.

Roberto Gell is an outstanding Dominican-American artist. His current EP Midnight Raversis now available on iTunes. With the rest of the album "in the can" and 5 new songs, he's a creative powerhouse who's already toured 3 times this year. Based in LA with the I-Trinity band, the whole crew has come East to perform with Dub Station. True roots lovers will be very encouraged to see such creativity & musicality (2 horns & violin are featured!).

...here's how to get there
Super easy to get to: just come out of Kenmore, as you would to Bill's Bar (on Brookline Ave), but instead of turning left on Landsdowne, you go 2 streets further and turn left on Kilmarnock. Go down a couple of blocks and Church is on your right. Go down the alley to its right to get behind it, where you'll find the 50 free spots available. But get there EARLY!

Kore' Van Baldwin
Kore' Van Baldwin has a variety of influences, fromTracy Chapmanand Billie Holidayto Jamiroquai. Sounding to some like a more soulful, high-energy Sade, Kore' hails from West Africa, but has made her home here in the U.S. amidst a variety of life experiences that show up in her music as complex poetry. Producer Kyle Russell heard in her non-Reggae recordings some serious potential on the Reggae stage. This upcoming performance 9/5 will demonstrate her powerful talent, unique and heartfelt lyrics, and capacity to blend with the other artists featured.

Rakia
Rakia's influences are many, but she's previously performed drawing most on the spirit of early 90's hip hop. Others have likened her performance to that of Desarie & Erica Badu. It's true, she does have a cosmopolitan background, having traveled & performed in such far flung places as theMontreal International Reggae Festival, the famous Roxy in LA, in Israel, and theGrafitti Hall of Fame in Harlem. Historically, apart from her work as a rapper, Rakia has more often provided bakup vocals, as with Roberto Gell, Michael Fabulous, and General Smiley. Rakia will be backing Kore' as well - but you'll be hearing her assuming the lead on several songs - a capacity her outstanding stage presence and sinewy vocals will demonstrate should make her a creative force to contend with in the Reggae world, going forward.

Journalist Bandoo
Journalist Bandoo and Dub Station go back a LONG way, to that first show at Bleachers in Salem, circa 1992, when he appeared with DJ Professor Face, alongside Skiffy & Mr. B, for what became the Rockers International showcase, and precursor to Dub Station proper. He's worked with Rocky Tracy (previously of the I-Tones), his own band Ambassa for many years, and a variety of backing bands performing up and down the Eastern Seaboard, out to Arizona and even Hawaii, and of course back in homeland, Jamaica. Journalist Bandoo's voice most resemblesGarnet Silk's, but is quite distinctive in power and clarity. He and has graced many internationally acclaimed recordings, some of the top hits of which will be featured at Church next week Saturday. It is an honor and pleasure to have him on board with Dub Station once again!

The adjoining restaurant next door (of the same name) - is open at 5pm (often serving lunch as well), and serves IN THE BAR - full dinner menu - right up until 11pm (so get there early!). There's salads, steak, seafood, and appetizers...something for every palate. Combine the night's portion of Reggae with a dining date!

The show was outstanding, and a perfect example of good teamwork between prepared vocalists and on-the-ball players. The Fiyah Family, as they call themselves collectively, hadn't worked with Dub Station in several years. Careful song selection as well as two efficient rehearsals brought everyone up to speed together.
